Little Hallingbury Village History Society (LHVHS) was formed in 1996. Initially the society met at Long Bar in Little Hallingbury before moving their meetings to the village hall. The society’s main aims are to collect items that relate to the evolution, people and businesses of the village which will, eventually, be catalogued so that they can be enjoyed by villagers and any other interested people or organisations.
First Monday of the month – 8pm
The society’s other main function is to organise a programme of talks which cover local, regional and national aspects of history. Talks have been given by slideshows, PowerPoints, home recordings and costumed performers. Areas covered include personalities from history, local foods and village signs, historical events and topics to help members research their own histories.
Each year, usually in May, the society also holds an annual Open Day. Besides memberships, this is the society’s main fundraiser. Over the years it has proven to be a popular village event, some of their records and research will be on display and friends can catch-up over a cup of tea and home-made cake. There are also stalls and displays of historical vehicles and farming tools for people to guess. Of course, the day also welcomes many people who are seeking to discover their roots or heritage within the village.
Eventually the society hopes to publish some of their research as small booklets but, in the meantime, this website can whet the appetite. The society meets regularly throughout the year and you can find our proposed programme elsewhere on this site.
Members of all ages are warmly welcomed – come for a taster meeting before you join. The villagers have helped shaped our past and can help shape our future. The society hopes you enjoy these pages and look forward to welcoming you soon.
